Becoming increasingly aware of my impending loss of free time, I've been trying to take in a bunch of movies recently and have been surprised at the outcomes. I'll spare the summaries and jump right into opinion, 'cause that's what I do best.
The movie I was anticipating the most was Julie & Julia, the movie based on a blog written by a woman who decided she would cook her way through all of Julia Child's cookbook recipes in a year. The blog itself is cuter than the movie. I saw it mid-afternoon on opening day, always the best choice. Overall, the movie was just...entertaining.
Immediately, I was annoyed by the role of Julie's husband played by Chris Messina. I think he was supposed to be an average-to-good-looking but witty supporter of his wife who eventually gets annoyed at the lack of attention he's getting despite living in a cramped tiny apartment in NYC. Anyone recognize this role? But, I can tolerate that enough-- if there had been less gratuitous loud open-mouthed chewing scenes scattered liberally with pointless sex scenes. Ok, I get it. They love each other. And then, about 3/4 of the way through the movie, he gets oddly irritated about something fairly mild and predictably returns shortly thereafter. His character chapped my ass every time he was on screen.
On the other hand, Meryl Streep was fantastic and saved the movie.
Overall, I'd see it again, but you're not missing anything by waiting for it to come out on DVD. It's not quite the foodies movie I thought it'd be. I get more foodie satisfaction by watching Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen.

You know, the husband annoyed me a bit as well, but Julie irritated me more. There's nothing I hate more than a person who attributes their success to a fictional creation of their own. She could not possibly just be successful on her own, she had to obsess about someone who in the end hated her- and who cares? She never knew the woman.
I thought it would have been a great movie if it were just called "Julia"... leave Julie and her gross eating husband out of it.
Although, I have to say, I did enjoy her REAL blog. She's much less cute and innocent in that one. It's pretty crude at times. You should check it out, you'd like it!
